Softball falls to Express

The Lakeland softball team traveled to Owens Community College today and dropped a pair of games by the score of 19-5 and 11-3. In game 1, Lakeland got off to a strong start as Carmen Alvarez tripled to lead off. Peyton Trick followed with an RBI double before Sydney Plotts singled to put runners on the corners with no one out. Following a Plotts stolen base, Abby Haydu ripped a 2-RBI single and the Lakers had a 3-0 lead before there was an out. Unfortunately the Lakers were unable to string anymore hits together before the Express hit in the home half of the 1st inning. The Express answered by scoring 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 Laker errors to take a 4-3 lead after 1 inning. In the top of the 2nd inning, Lakeland knotted the score at 4 as Alvarez ripped a solo homerun. The Express then took an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning as they took advantage of 4 Lakeland errors. Lakeland was unable to score in the 3rd inning despite a couple of walks and the Express then plated one more run in the home half. Trailing 9-4 in the top of the 4th inning, Alvarez started a rally again with a 1 out walk. Peyton Trick followed with a single before they both advanced on a double steal. Alvarez was then cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice by Plotts. Abby Haydu followed with an RBI-single. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Express would put the game out of reach in the home half of the inning as they took advantage of several walks and defensive miscues.

In game 2, the Express jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held that score until the top of the 3rd ining when the Lakers took control. Sydney Plotts got things started going with a 1-out single. Morgan Gross later drew a walk before Emerson Hren hit an RBI-double. Leah Richter then followed with a 2-RBI single putting the Lakers up 3-2. The Lakers were unable to hold that lead though and the Express took game 2.
