Women's Hoops Tips Off Season
Starting at the top can be a difficult thing as the Alpena Community College women's basketball team discovered this afternoon. ACC took on Rock Valley College from Rockford, Illinois, the #6 team in the country in NJCAA Division 2 according to the coaches' preseason poll.
Rock Valley showed why they are so highly regarded with an 81-37 win over the Lumberjacks. Rock Valley posted a 34-2 record last season and made it to the national quarterfinals. The game was part of the Terrace Bay Hotel Tip-Off Classic hosted by Bay College in Escanaba.
After the Golden Eagles raced out to a 13-0 advantage, coach Karl Momrik's ACC squad regrouped and outscored Rock Valley 17-13 for the remainder of the quarter to trail only 26-17 after the first quarter.
However, Rock Valley's pressing defense and offensive rebounding took its toll as the Lumberjacks were outscored 43-10 in the middle two periods.
ACC was outrebounded 50-24 and the Golden Eagles forced 38 Lumberjack turnovers.
Saige Flaugher led ACC with 10 points in her college debut. Anna Herbolsheimer, Jena Wambold and Jessie Ross each scored six points. Herbolseimer and Allison Cece each had five rebounds while Wambold pulled down four.
ACC (0-1) will play Jackson College tomorrow at 10:00 am.
