Owens runs past Glen Oaks in second half
Viking women's basketball falls at home.
The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team made its first appearance at home this season Monday night and played its way to a first-half lead. But Owens shifted gears in the second half to notch a 61-40 victory over the Vikings.
After trailing 12-11 through the first 10 minute of play, GOCC had a solid second quater grab a 26-24 lead at the break. Freshman Jordyn Partee scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the first half and classmate Kennedy Lockett dropped in all eight of her points before intermission.
Owens, which shot 44.1 percent from the field for the game and outscored GOCC 10-0 in transition points, started converting at a high rate in the paint and moved ahead 40-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
A relentless full-court press continued to give the Vikings problems and Owens went on to outscore Glen Oaks 21-5 in the final frame.
Jayla Parker-Vincent scored four points, Chelsi Zyla finished with three, and Tracy Ackley, Amanda Barber, Kaytlin Smith and Kylie Quist each recorded two points for the Vikings. Natalie Whitaker added a free throw for GOCC, which dropped to 1-2 overall this season.
Partee swiped four steals and had nine rebounds and Whitaker led the team with two assists.
Glen Oaks is back in action Friday at home at 7 p.m. against Wabash Valley.
