Jamestown Men Sweep Post Journal Classic Weekend

JAMESTOWN, NY - You can't ask for much more than what the Jamestown Community College (JCC) men's basketball team provided their fans in a weekend sweep of their home basketball classic.

After topping Sullivan County Community College on Saturday 88-76, the Jayhawks had an even more impressive showing on Sunday, taking down Butler County Community College 82-54.

The final score doesn't tell the tale of how close this one felt early.

Jamestown trailed 14-11 with 13 minutes to play in the first when Travis Castro splashed a three to even things up.

The Jayhawks took their first lead of the game at the 6:25 mark, when sophomore Ilyass Kaichi made a nifty move in the paint to get the hoop and the harm. He converted the and one for three of his seven off the bench.

JCC would start to build a lead from there.

Federico Foddai made a transition layup, then hit a triple of his own to push the advantage to 28-20. The Italian finished the game with 13 points.

The lead ballooned to 20 points in the second half thanks to play from Joey Valerio off the pine. His put-back bucket at halfway through the second frame made it 57-36 JCC. Valerio had a team-high 16 off the bench.

Late in the game, the reserves got the crowd fired up, with Blake Bernstein and Dwayne Motley both finding the bottom of the net. Motley is an Olean High School alum.

JCC cruised to the 28-point win.

"We played really well as a team today," said JCC Head Coach Xavier Churnac. "We're starting to rely on each other and and playing more team basketball. We need to continue to grow in that aspect moving foward. We have Genesee next and that will be a tough test," added Churnac.

That's three in a row for the Jayhawks, who now get ready for Genesee at home on Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
