Broncbuster winning streak snapped on walk-off homer
Dodge City, KS-On the verge of winning their 10th straight game, the unthinkable happened in the bottom of the seventh.
Clinging to a two-run lead with two outs, two on, and two strikes to nine-hole hitter, Kloe Nelson, Ashlyn Powell left a breaking ball over the heart of the plate, a pitch that the Conquistadors' left fielder devoured into the Dodge City night, giving the home team a walk-off, 6-5 victory at Legends Park on Friday night.
The loss stings even more considering the Broncbusters crushed a pair of home runs to break a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh. Maria Fori, the NJCAA National Player of the Week, and Maysen Kurene-Iwikau went back-to-back to make it 5-3.
But Powell couldn't finish the job when Dodge City came to the plate. She walked Jordyn Boxberger and hit Riley Moore. That setup the fatal sequence with Nelson, who helped the Conquistadors claim their second walk-off win this week.
Fori extended her hitting streak to 10 straight games for Garden City, which fell to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in conference. She's hit 10 home runs and is batting .579 on the year.
