Blue Devils Scoot by Saint Mary JV in Season Opener

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team defeated the University of Saint Mary College JV Spires, 72-71 Nov. 1 at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo. Capri Garrett had a monster game for her first time in a Blue Devil jersey while scoring 20 points and bringing down 21 rebounds. That ties the third most rebounds in a single game in KCKCC women's basketball history.

Samaire Slusarek led the team with 25 points while bringing down five rebounds. Both Emma Berenguer Fernandez and Bennett Peck finished the game with 11 points and made two three-point shots. Slusarek clutched up in the fourth quarter as she shot 3-4 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line with nine points.

The fourth quarter started with a score of 56 to 54 in favor of the Spires. It was neck and neck until 21 seconds left on the clock.  Zoe Clark brought down an offensive rebound and got fouled while trailing 71 to 70. Clark stepped up to the free throw line and nailed both to take the lead. The Spires shot with 13 seconds remaining and missed. The Blue Devils quickly got the rebound and immediately got fouled. Berenguer Fernandez was unable to make either of the two free throws with seven seconds on the clock, but the Spires couldn't convert to take the win.

For the game, the Lady Blue Devils shot 39.7 percent from the field (23-58), 33.3 percent from three-point range (4-12) and 64.7 percent from the free-throw line (22-34). The Spires shot 29.9 percent from the field (20-67), 16.1 percent from three-point range (5-31) and 78.8 percent from the free-throw line (26-33).

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is against Missouri Valley College at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Mo.
