Saturday, January 25, 2025: Men's Basketball
Baton Rouge, LA
In their first meeting on the court, the Baton Rouge Bears faced off against the Mississippi Community Christian College Hurricanes this afternoon at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. This game marked the Bears' final non-conference matchup before beginning LCCAC play on January 29. The Bears used this opportunity to refine their strategies before the conference season, successfully getting key contributions from every player on their bench. The Bears triumphed over the Hurricanes with a dominant score of 112-51.
In the first half, after the game started tied at 2, the Bears surged ahead, scoring 12 consecutive points to establish a 14-2 lead with just over fourteen minutes remaining. Their effective offensive movement led to numerous scoring opportunities, while their strong defense limited the Hurricanes to single possessions. Although the Hurricanes temporarily narrowed the gap to 20-13 with over ten minutes to go in the half, the Bears had significant bench contributions from Jack King, Cardez Norman, Dylan Dominique, and Christian Myers allowing them to go on a remarkable 37-6 run to finish the half with a commanding 57-19 lead.
During halftime, Head Coach Byron Starks emphasized the importance of continuing to share the ball and maintaining their aggressive play in the second half. The Bears followed through with this plan, giving their bench ample playing time. The team recorded an impressive total of 34 assists throughout the game, demonstrating their excellent ball movement. While the defense showed some lapses during the second half, they still managed to limit the Hurricanes to just 32 points. The Bears outscored the Hurricanes 55-32 in the second half, sealing their victory with a final score of 112-51. Remarkably, the Bears' bench contributed 101 of the team's 112 points.
Jack King led the Bears in scoring with a game-high 25 points, while the Hurricanes were led by Jalen Harvey, who scored 11 points. The Bears had four players scoring in double figures: King, Myers, Deen, and Norman. With this win, the Bears improved their season record to 9-8. The 61-point margin of victory was the largest at home since December 31, 2024, when the Bears defeated Baton Rouge Post Grad 98-47 (a 51-point margin).
Bears Highlights:
Jack King led the Bears with 25 points, connecting on 10 of 16 shots from the field.
Imran Deen contributed 12 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
Christian Myers and Cardez Norman each added 10 points off the bench.
The Bears will kick off conference play on Wednesday, January 29, when they host the Delgado Dolphins in the Bears Den. The tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
