LEESBURG, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball took on Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) this weekend to open Sun-Lakes Conference play. The Lakehawks outscored the Manta Rays 22-5 to sweep the opening series.
Game 1 – FSCJ 1, Lake-Sumter 6
The Lakehawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a double from Mason Blackburn scored Camden Williamson from second. In second inning, the Manta Rays tied the score at 1-1 but back-to-back homeruns from Ean Gimson and Matthew Dumas extended the Lakehawks' lead 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tad Brooks hit the Lakehawks' third homerun of the game to bring the score to 6-1 for the game one win.
Redshirt sophomore Max Windham tossed a career-first complete-game to improve to 3-1 on the mound. He pitched a two-hitter, allowing just one run with six strikeouts.
Game 2 – FSCJ 0, Lake-Sumter 2
The Lakehawks needed just two runs in third inning to secure the game two win over the Manta Rays.
Gimson and Dumas each drew walks to lead off the top of the third.
A base hit from Ryan Villaman scored Gimson. Then, an infield groundball from Mason Blackburn allowed Dumas to score their second run of the inning.
Freshman Jack Johnson improved to 4-1 on the mound. In 6.1 shutout innings, he allowed just six hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Freshman Elliot Sande took the mound in the bottom of the seventh to relieve Johnson and record his second save of the season.
Game 3 – FSCJ 4, Lake-Sumter 14
Lake-Sumter secured the sweep over FSCJ in game three with an impressive 17-hit performance.
Edwin Melendez went 2-for-5 with a three-run homerun and a double.
Tanner Reid went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Williamson and Dumas had three hits each.
Pitching efforts from Fabian Romero, Riley Fitzgerald, and Ethon Tesmer helped the Lakehawks to secure the series sweep over the Manta Rays.
Romero recorded the win on the mound with 6.0 innings pitched. He allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while fanning four to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Fitzgerald tossed one inning allowing one run on three hits. Tesmer closed out the game with a perfect one inning pitched on the mound.
With three wins, Lake-Sumter improved to a 15-4 overall record and a 3-0 record in conference. The wins also extend their win streak to eleven, which stands as the longest running win streak in known Lakehawk Baseball history.
After the first weekend of conference play, the Lakehawks rank first as the only team in the conference to end the weekend with three wins.
