ROCHESTER, NY - Monroe Community College (16-4, 1-0) defeated Erie Community College (10-10, 0-1) by a score of 75-73 in a tightly contested matchup at Monagan Court.
The first half saw both teams exchange leads, with Monroe taking a slim 36-35 advantage into the break.
Denarius McCurty led the way for the Tribunes, scoring 14 points, while David Stroud kept the Kats competitive with 18 points in the first half.
In the second half, Monroe maintained its slight edge, extending its lead to as many as seven before Erie rallied late.
Erie's Negedu David-Maji and Stroud each had strong performances, combining for 31 points, but it was not enough to secure the comeback.
Monroe's Omar White and Jaheem Tyson contributed crucial baskets, finishing the game with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tribunes shot 44.1% from the field and converted 19 of 26 free throws (73.1%).
Erie struggled with turnovers, committing 15 while Monroe had 14.
With the victory, Monroe earned its first victory in conference play.
