Lakers Split with Southeast

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team split games today with Southeast Community College. The Lakers dropped game one of the four-game series 8-11 before rallying back to win game two 15-8. This brings the Lakers to a record of 3-1 on the season. 

 

Game 1: 8 (ILCC), 11 (SCC)

 

             The Lakers came out hard in game one, striking first with a single from Abby Burgess. The first score from the Lakers would come from a two-run homer from Macy Pickett. Marrissa Miller would score on a single from Taylor Larson. The final score of the inning would come from Taylor Larson, who would take advantage of a throwing error from the Bobcat catcher. Macy Pickett would have a three-up, three-down bottom of the first in the circle. 

 

            Abby Burgess would tally another run in the top of the second with a line-drive solo home run. Macy Pickett would then double on a line drive to center and come around to score later in the inning, extending the Laker's lead to 6-0. Karlee Akers would score on a fielding error by the right fielder on a ball from Taylor Larson. Southeast would strike back in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four singles, one double, and a walk. 

 

            The next score would come from the Bobcats, scoring one run in the bottom of the third. The fourth inning would only see a score from the Bobcats, as they scored an additional five runs on two singles, a walk, and a grand slam. Both teams would remain scoreless until one final fight from the Lakers in the top of the seventh as Kaitlyn DuChateau scored on a Burgess triple to right field. The Lakers would fall short, finishing with eight runs to the Bobcat's eleven. 

            Macy Pickett and Abby Burgess would tally the first home runs of their career and season, respectively. Burgess led the team with three hits, while Pickett and Larson each had two. 

 

Game 2: 15 (ILCC), 8 (SCC)

 

The second game started slower than the first, as the first score of the game would come from the Bobcats in the bottom of the second. 

 

The Lakers would see their first score of the game in the top of the third as Bailey Smith scored on a line drive to center field from Macy Pickett. Taylor Larson would clear the bases with a three-run shot to right-center, bringing the Lakers to a four-run lead. The Bobcats would rally back in the bottom of the inning, earning three runs on three singles, a walk, and an error. 

 

Karlee Akers would lead off the top of the fourth with a single to the left fielder, reaching second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Bailey Smith would follow by tallying her third hit-by-pitch of the day. Kaitlyn DuChateau hit a home run to right field, scoring Akers and Smith. Taylor Larson would hold the Laker's defense down, throwing a scoreless fourth and fifth inning. 

 

The only score of the sixth inning for the Lakers would come from Karlee Akers, who would come across on a double from Bailey Smith. Kassidy Elkins would enter the circle for the Lakers, allowing two singles and a walk. Southeast would have two come across in the bottom of the sixth on three total singles for the inning.

 

Marrissa Miller would start the seventh inning with a walk and a stolen base. Macy Picket would score Miller on a single to the right fielder. Korilynn Christians would reach on error, and Karlee Akers would take a walk. Christians would score on an infield single from Alexis Cullinane and Akers would score on a stolen base. Cullinane would score on a bases-loaded walk from Abby Burgess. Macy Pickett would hit a hard line drive to the left fielder, scoring both Smith and DuChateau and extending the Laker's lead to nine runs. 

 

Southeast would not go down easy, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Elkins would shut down the Bobcat's efforts, ending the game with a ground ball to DuChateau.

 

Kaitlyn DuChateau, Bailey Smith, Macy Pickett, and Karlee Akers each had two hits in the second game. Taylor Larson and Kaitlyn DuChateau would tally their first homerun of their season and career, respectively. The Lakers had six stolen bases, including two each from Karlee Akers and Korilynn Christians.  

 

The Lakers return tomorrow to finish the four-game series against Southeast at 12 and 2.
