After a week in The Grand Canyon State, the Marian University Ancilla Softball team will now head home to host their first games of the season. But first, they had a Thursday double-header with Madonna University's Junior Varsity squad...a team they began their trip against on Sunday. The Chargers unfortunately fell twice again, 9-0 and 11-2, but they improved throughout the week, and below are some highlights from yesterday's action.
GAME-1 (L 9-0): Marian Ancilla opened the day with a tough time at the plate, as two Madonna pitchers combined for 5 innings of work and didn't allow a hit. However, Freshman Hannah Carter was able to reach safely following an error in the 2nd inning, while Freshman Cayla Beasley worked her way on via a walk. Additionally, Sophomore pitcher Sofie Francis worked 4 solid innings in relief without allowing an earned run. Sophomore Samantha Hoffman (0-2) was credited with the decision this game.
GAME-2 (L 11-2): In the second contest, the Chargers were able to get runners aboard in the 1st and 2nd innings, but they were unable to get anyone home to score. Finally, in the bottom of the 5th inning, they were able to plate two runners. Freshman Lilliana McMillen led off the inning with a walk, then after an out, Freshman Morgan Fogle walked as well. With two outs in the inning, Hannah Carter stepped to the plate and doubled to center field, driving in both runners, and cutting the lead to 11-2. Carter was 2-for-3 on the day with 2 runs batted in. Sofie Francis again worked 4 innings in relief, and she again did not allow an earned run. Freshman pitcher Madison Lowe (0-1) picked up her first decision of the year.
The Softball team will now have a few days to prepare for their next opponent. On Tuesday, March 18th, the Chargers are set to host Indiana Wesleyan University's JV/Club team. That game is set to start at 5:00 p.m. at the MUAC campus, so please come out and support the ladies, if you are able.
