Twin Falls, ID – No. 10 Indian Hills Men's Basketball walked out of Twin Falls, ID with its second consecutive win in as many nights as the Warriors capped an unbeaten weekend at the CSI Invitational. The Warriors dropped host College of Southern Idaho 87-79 to move to 6-1 on the year.
A night after dropping a season-high 15 points, freshman Zevin Gadson (Akron, OH/Buchtel) upped his efforts on Saturday night as the shifty guard went for 20 points. Fellow freshman Mason Costello (Waukee, IA/Waukee) lit up the scoring column with a season-best 19 points while knocking down four three-point shots. Sophomore Trenton Walters (Frisco, TX/Radford) was an efficient 5-6 from the floor to finish the night with 17 points.
The Warriors, who knocked off Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday night, led by as many as 14 in Saturday night's affair with the Golden Eagles. A late push from the home team was thwarted by a series of defensive stops late in the second half to combine with timely shooting from the Warriors. Indian Hills improves to 5-2 all-time vs. the Golden Eagles, three time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Basketball National Champions.
Trailing by three at the break, Indian Hills outscored Southern Idaho 55-44 in the second stanza on an effective 58.1 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, including 6-12 from three-point range. The stingy Indian Hills defense once again clamped down on the opposition, forcing 19 CSI miscues, scoring 22 points off turnovers.
Gadson powered the Warriors in the second half, scoring 15 of his game-high 20 points while going 5-7 from the floor. Costello added 10 of his points in the second frame while Walters scored all but three of his 14 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
It was all Indian Hills from the jump as the Warriors scored the first eight points of the game before pulling ahead to a 19-5 lead just seven minutes into the contest. The Warriors maintained a comfortable double-digit lead until the Golden Eagles chipped away, eventually taking a 25-24 lead with just five minutes to play. The Golden Eagles led 35-29 in the closing seconds before Costello was awarded three free throws with 0.2 seconds on the clock as the freshman drained all three to build momentum heading into the locker room.
The Warriors used another quick start in the second half with a 17-7 run to jump back on top. A quick seven-point stretch from Costello helped the Warriors pull away before a three from Walters at the 4:44 mark gave Indian Hills a 14-point advantage. A series of blocks down the stretch, including a stop and bucket from Gadson in the closing seconds sealed the win for the Warriors.
Indian Hills' road swing continues with a three-game set in Illinois this week. The Warriors will travel to Wabash Valley College (IL) on Wednesday before a pair of games at the John A. Logan Invitational in Carbondale, IL on Friday and Saturday.
