
ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College men's lacrosse team scored eight second-half goals, but couldn't overcome an eight-goal deficit in an 18-12 loss to No. 5 Genesee at Siegert Field Saturday afternoon.
Jordan Fanzo led the AACC offense with five goals and two assists. Tyson Miller added four goals on six shots on net, connecting twice from swift passes from X by Sahil Lengade.
The Riverhawks scored first, less than five minutes into the game, but the Cougars used a nine-goal run spanning first and second quarters to hold an eight-goal lead at the 10:08 mark of the second.
Sampson connected with Fanzo for back-to-back strikes less than two minutes apart to make it 9-3 Genesee with 7:28 left in the half.
The Riverhawks outscored their guests, 4-2, in the third quarter. Goals from Fanzo and Miller started AACC's scoring in the frame, which after broken up by a Genesee man-up goal, continued with the first career goal from Evan Davidson and another Miller goal.
Defenseman TJ Swann opened the scoring in the fourth when he caused a turnover on a Cougars clear attempt, grabbed the groundball just outside the restraining line and scored for his first career goal. The Riverhawks garnered momentum as the period went on, seeing Fanzo and Justin Sampson net goals in the final 6:08 of the game.
James Kavney went 10-29 at the faceoff x, going up against Luke Smeader, the NJCAA leader in draws.
Riverhawks keeper Parrish Fleming made 15 saves in the game.
Both teams were efficient on the clear, with AACC successful in 20 of 24 attempts, and Genesee clearing at a 21-for-25 rate.
The Cougars scored four man-up goals in five opportunities while holding AACC to one in four chances.
Next up for the Riverhawks is a 6 p.m. home game against Howard Community College on Wednesday, March 12. The game is a non-region matchup; the two teams will meet again for Region 20 standings at Howard on April 5.
