WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played their final home game before Christmas Break by hosting Hinds on Thursday, December 12. The Lady Wolves had to grind out a win against the Lady Bulldogs taking the game, 63-57, running their season-long winning streak to eight games.
"This was an excellent team win for us," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "Our defense in the second half was outstanding!"
The teams opened the first quarter matching basket for basket as the score stood at 7-7 with 6:16 left to play. The Lady Wolves then went on a 9-2 scoring run to take a 16-9 lead with three minutes left on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs then closed out the quarter on a 9-3 scoring run cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 19-18 aided by a buzzer-beating three-point shot.
Both teams struggled to score in the opening minutes of the second quarter as the Lady Wolves scored just two points to push their lead to 21-18 with 6:12 left on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs then went on a 10-7 scoring run to end the quarter as the game was tied 28-28 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The game continued to be played at a stalemate as the teams matched scoring output with four points each to open the third quarter as the score stood at 32-32 with 7:18 left. Both teams then added seven points each to their total as the game remained tied at 39-39 with 3:18 remaining. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with a 7-5 scoring run to hold a slim lead at 45-43 heading to the final quarter of play.
The Lady Wolves opened the fourth quarter with a 6-2 scoring run to push their lead to 51-45 with 6:32 left to play. Both teams then added five points to their total as the Lady Wolves maintained their lead at 56-50 with 3:23 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Wolves closed out the game by adding seven points each to their totals as the Lady Wolves secured the 63-57 victory.
"Kam Pruitt and Jay Robinson did a great job of rebounding the ball down the stretch," added Stephens. "Maddi Mitchell stepped up big for us in the fourth quarter after Kylinn Bell's injury. She led our team and kept us composed down the stretch."
Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she narrowly missed out on a double-double performance with a game-leading 19 points paired with seven rebounds, three assists, and a game-leading six steals while Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) posted a double-double of 15 points and ten rebounds.
Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) had eight points with Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge) and Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) adding six points each while Robinson also narrowly missed a double-double with a game-leading 11 rebounds. Kylinn Bell (Choctaw) had five points and Kaylee Johnson (Booneville) had four points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin is now 10-3 overall and will play their final game before the Christmas Break as they hit the road to face off against LSU-Eunice on Saturday, December 14. Tip-off between the Lady Bengals and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m.
