Centerville, IA – Ellsworth baseball opened up league play with a split with Division I-side Indian Hills on Monday. The doubleheader was moved up from Wednesday to avoid winter weather potentially moving into the state.
Game 1 Notes (L 11-9 vs. Indian Hills):
- Ellsworth started off the game with a 4-0 lead courtesy of a Brandon Weigel lead-off home run, followed by a Maddox O'Connor three-RBI double several batters later.
- Indian Hills countered with a four-run first inning of their own, followed by a four-run second inning to take an 8-5 lead into the third.
- O'Connor finished going 2-4 with four RBI and one run scored. O'Connor added to his earlier double with a single-shot home run to left field in the top of the third.
- The Panthers tied it up in the top fourth, 8-8, with a Riley Schrader two-RBI double. The Panthers would also equal the score in the top of the sixth after drawing a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
- Casey Clair struck out six batters in three innings of relief pitching.
Game 2 Notes (W 10-4 vs. Indian Hills):
- The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board in Game 2: Boston Doeschot homered to right field to score Eric McGill and give the Panthers a 2-0 start to the game.
- Doeschot would expand the Ellsworth lead with two more home runs in the top of the 3rd and 5th innings. Doeschot went an impressive 4-for-5 on the nightcap, tallying six RBI from his three home runs.
- Eric McGill, Riley Shrader, and Bryce Hoskinson all went 3-5 from the plate to close out the day.
- Jakob Nachreiner produced seven strikeouts across seven innings of work, containing seven hits surrented to just two earned runs allowed.
- The Panthers tallied 19 hits in the nightcap to help snap a five-game losing streak to the Warriors. Ellsworth last defeated Indian Hills on March 20, 2023 in Centerville.
Next up: A busy weekend as the Panthers host a three-game series against No. 19-ranked Kirkwood to open the home season. First pitch times are scheduled for 1:00/3:00 PM on Saturday, March 22 followed by Sunday's noon start time.
