Daytona Beach, FL – The Falcons earned their first FCSAA DI Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday, October 27 with a 6-0 win over Eastern Florida State College.
Freshman Sienna Gillespie was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player as she scored three goals and had one assist on the night. Coach Hope Clark was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.
"I am incredibly proud of this team and program for the continued work they have put in since last year, a Region 8 Championship has been a part of our vision and to see it come to fruition tonight and in this fashion was something I will forever cherish," said Clark.
Gillespie got the scoring going early in the first half off a double assist from freshmen, Valeria Vasquez, and Shaneil Buckley. She would follow up less than one minute later with an unassisted goal for her fifth goal of the season. Freshman, Jimena Castro would score her third goal of the season as Buckley would play her a ball deep in the attacking third. The Falcons would go into halftime up 3-0 over the Titans.
Daytona State would come out on fire in the second half outshooting Eastern Florida 15-3. Sophomore Madison Gellner would score her fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute after manipulating past a Titan defender on the right flank before placing the ball into the side netting, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Less than three minutes after Gellner's impressive goal, sophomore Mia Gonzales would score a header, assisted by a well-placed ball from Gillespie. In the final minute of play FCSAA Goalkeeper of the Year, Julianna Trujillo would make her way up the field to take a free kick in her defensive half. Her well-placed ball in the Titans penalty area would find the foot of Gillespie for her first hat-trick of her Falcon career and Trujillo's first assist.
The Falcons out shot the Titans 23-7 and had the edge in corners 5-2. Trujillo would add three saves during the 90 minutes of play.
Daytona State advances to the Southeast District Tournament in Melbourne, where the Falcons will be the No. 1 seed in the four-team tournament.
