Phantoms Fall Short in Williamson Doubleheader
Media, PA—After taking an early lead in each end of a doubleheader with Williamson College of the Trades, Delaware County Community College recorded a pair of losses to the Mechanics. DCCC's errors were costly in both contests.
In Game 1, a hard-fought 7-4 defeat, Jarrett Mayes got the Phantoms on the board early with an RBI double in the top of the first. Mayes led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Michael Turner and Josh Claycomb each delivered RBI hits in the top of the seventh.
On the mound, Matt Delacruz took the loss in a solid effort, pitching four and one-third innings and allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out six. The Phantoms were aggressive on the basepaths, swiping five bases, two each by Turner and Benjamin Beasley.
The Phantoms jumped out to a five-run lead in Game 2 after batting around in the first inning. Bryce Johnson's RBI single put DCCC on the board, followed by a two-run double from Izaah Perocier and another two-run double from Steven Perez II.
Despite the early advantage, the Phantoms lost their momentum. Scoreless through the rest of the game, they were defeated 15-5. Jackson Davis took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing six runs (with only one earned) on five hits while striking out one.
Perocier and Perez II each drove in two runs, while Johnson, Mayes, Gabriel Murphy, and Turner each contributed a hit. The team recorded three stolen bases.
Phantoms Head Baseball Coach Ryan Hunter offered kudos while taking accountability. "We give a lot of credit to Williamson and their student section, which truly swung home field advantage in their favor," he said. "This is a fundamental game, and we had as many errors—11—as we had hits today. It's hard to win that way."
He is confident in his team. "We're playing some really tough competition, and we're getting better each day," said Hunter. "It will all click soon."
The Phantoms welcome the RCSJ Cumberland Dukes to the DCCC Baseball Field at 901 S Media Line Rd in Media for a single game at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 14. DCCC will travel to Vineland, NJ for two on Saturday to complete the three-game weekend series. The JBB Junior College Baseball publication currently ranks the Dukes as 22nd in the nation, according to Hunter.
