Freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood came off the bench to score 21 points as the DMACC women's basketball team improved to 8-4 with a 64-56 win over Minnesota West Community and Technical College (MWCTC) December 11 at Worthington, Minn.
Costello made nine of 15 field goal attempts in leading the Bears to the win. She made two of six three-point attempts and was 1-of-2 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda scored 10 points for the Bears and freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The second and third periods were pivotal for DMACC. The Bears were behind 12-9 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Ladyjays 20-13 in the second period to take a 32-25 lead into halftime. DMACC continued its dominance in the third period with a 24-12 run for a 53-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears shot 35 percent in the win, making 26 of 74 field goal attempts, including 6-of-26 from the three-point range. They made six of eight free throw attempts.
Clayburg's 10 rebounds helped DMACC to a 48-47 advantage on the boards. Walker came away with six rebounds, sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville had five rebounds to go with eight points and Costello also had five rebounds. Walker led the Bears in assists and steals with four and three respectively.
The DMACC women's basketball team, 1-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), faces Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Dec. 15 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles are undefeated at 10-0 overall and are 3-0 in the ICCAC. They are the No. 1 team in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
