Sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines led five players in double figures with 20 points as the DMACC men's basketball team took an 88-71 decision from Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) January 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomores Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., had 17 and 10 points respectively and freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Valley and Jaden Jefferson of Forney, Texas, came away with 16 and 12 points respectively as the Bears improved to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the ICCAC.
ILCC, which fell to 9-7 and 2-5, had a brief 3-1 lead with the game less than a minute old before Carson's three-pointer gave DMACC the lead for good a 4-3 with 18 minutes, 42 seconds to play in the opening half. DMACC led by as many as 19 points before settling for a 49-33 advantage at halftime. The Bears never led by less than nine points in the second half and their 47-30 lead at the 1:46 mark of the first half was the largest of the game.
DMACC, the No. 7 team in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), shot 52 percent from the field, hitting 36 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-25 from three-point range and 9-of-13 from the free throw line.
ILCC shot 45 percent with 27 field goals from 60 attempts. The Lakers made five of 17 shots from beyond the arc and were 12-of-20 from the free throw line.
Carson recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 39-32 advantage on the boards. Austin added eight rebounds and Fisher finished with seven. Sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., dished out a team-high eight assists and Jefferson topped DMACC in steals with five.
The DMACC men's basketball team will step away from ICCAC play with a matchup against Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) Jan. 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears came away with a 105-74 decision when the two teams played Nov. 25 at Inver Hills, Minn.
