The MCC volleyball team qualified for the Region XII Championship Great Lake District B for a chance to advance to the National tournament.
On Thursday November 7th, the Jayhawks started off the tournament facing Clark State from Ohio and won in 5 sets to advance to the next round.
MCC was scheduled to play Lansing Community College for the third time this season and lost a heartbreaking 5 set match with the 5th set score going into overtime of 15-17.
The loss to Lansing put them in the losers bracket where they needed to win to make it to the third day.
Friday afternoon they beat Macomb in 4 sets before losing to Kellogg in 4 sets to end their season. MCC faced adversity this past weekend with illnesses, but never failed to stop competing.
The offense was led by sophomore setter Shelbie Schoenborn dishing out 192 assists. Ana Trevino, a Montague native, led the team in kills with 55 kills which is good for a .323 hitting clip. Sophomore outside hitter Madisyn Dykema finished with 53 kills followed by freshman outside hitter Madison Babinec with 45 kills (career high of 19 kills against Clark State).
Sophomore middle hitter, Kayla Fisk, chipped in 33 kills with only making 9 errors the whole weekend.
Defensively, Kaylee Balcom led the way with 82 digs (4.56 digs per set) with a career high of 25 digs against Clark State. Balcom also led the team behind the service line with 15 aces with 8 of them coming in one match. Sophomore Rachel Romero picked up 49 digs and was second in aces with 9.
Freshman Ellerie Moy dominated at the net, leading the team with 15 block assists followed by Trevino with 14. Fisk chipped in 9.
The Jayhawks end their season with a 18-14 overall record, 8-4 in conference which is good for a third place finish. This team showed so much growth and was always working to improve. Post season awards will be announced this week.
