Glen Oaks baseball splits with Southeastern Illinois
Vikings cruise in opener and drop second game by a run.
Wrapping up a four-game series with Southeastern Illinois College Tuesday in Carbondale, Ill., the Glen Oaks Community College baseball team finished 3-1 after splitting a doublheader. After Monday's sweep, the Viking bats remained scorching hot in the first game Tuesday before losing Game 2 by a run.
Game 1
Glen Oaks 27, Southeastern Illinois 11 (5 innings)
It was another outstanding performance by Caleb Mallory, who drove in six runs on three hits to pace GOCC in a blowout victory. Mallory doubled in the first to score a pair of runs, singled in the third scoring two, and singled in the second to plate a run. In total, the Vikings registered 22 hits. The Vikings jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Mallory doubled, scoring two runs, Tyler Shisler had an RBI single, Corbin White pushed in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Steven Drewyor drew a walk, scoring one run.
Glen Oaks added seven runs on six hits in the top of the second inning. Mallory produced an RBI single, Andrew Onuegbu singled to drive in two more, Drewyor was struck by a pitch that scored a run, Peyton Simmons doubled for a RBI, and Braeden Becker singled, scoring one run. It was a similar story in the third frame as the Vikings tacked on six more runs for an 18-1 lead. Southeastern Illinois bounced back with nine runs in the home half of the inning, but the damage was already done and GOCC had more in the tank.
In the third, Drewyor drew a walk, scoring one run, Cohen Yoder hit into a fielder's choice that scored a run, Gionni Fonseca had an RBI single, Mallory singled, scoring two runs, and Daniel Vizthum tripled for an RBI.
Glen Oaks plated six runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. A Yoder fielder's choice produced a run, Fonseca drew a walk, scoring one run, Mallory drove in one on a fielder's choice, Jayden Hamilton singled, scoring two runs, and Callum Wesseldyk singled, scoring one run.
Brady Mescher earned the win for Glen Oaks after giving up one hit and one run over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Jayden Sloniker opened the game for Glen Oaks Community College. The pitcher gave up one hit and one run (zero earned) over one inning, with two strikeouts and no walks. Hunter Tinervia, Travis North, and Gavin Peterson each appeared in relief for the Vikings. Shisler, Hamilton, and Mallory each registered three hits, while Simmons, Vizthum, Yoder, and Wesseldyk each had two hits.
Game 2
Southestern Illinois 7, Glen Oaks 6 (7 innings)
Down 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Southeastern Illinois got a two-run shot to turn the table and hang on for the win. Logan O'Malley and Braeden Becker each collected two hits for Glen Oaks, which got on the board in the top of the first inning after Southeastern Illinois College committed an error, and Peyton Simmons grounded out, each scoring one run. In the bottom of the first, Southeastern took the lead after a double to right field, a Viking error, and a single to right field, each scoring one run.
O'Malley singled to left field for a game-tying RBI in the top of the second. Southeastern pulled ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the third with two runs. Glen Oaks would tie things up in the top of the fourth. A double by Becker gave the Vikings the advantage, 6-5, in the top of the fifth. Jayden Sloniker took the loss for Glen Oaks Community College. The right-handed pitcher went four innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits, striking out two and walking two. Simmons, Cohen Yoder, O'Malley, and Becker each drove in one run for Glen Oaks Community College. Glen Oaks Community College stole four bases in the game.
