The Virginia Peninsula Community College baseball team ran its winning streak to four last week by defeating one of the best teams in the nation before losing a doubleheader the following day.
It was a light week on the schedule with just a weekend series against Paul D. Camp Community College, a Region 10 opponent ranked No.5 in NJCAA Division III.
The Gators (6-16, 5-4) took the first game, held March 15 at Camp, coming from four runs down to win 11-10 in 11 innings. Cameron Johnson (Nansemond River High School/Suffolk) led off the 11th with a double and scored one out later on an error. Cody Myers (Liberty/Richmond) threw one inning of hitless relief for the win.
Brendan Walker (Lancaster) drove in two runs in the top of the 10th, but the Hurricanes evened it in the bottom half. VPCC trailed 5-1 after three innings but used a five-run fourth to get back into the game. They scored on an error, a bases-loaded walk, a fielder's choice, a steal of home by Justin Bryson (Arbor View HS/Las Vegas) and a single by Johnson. Bryson had four hits, Marco Fernandez (Spanish River HS/Fla.) had a home run among his three hits, Johnson had three hits, and Tyler Stobbs (Spotswood HS/Harrisonburg) had two.
The series switched to War Memorial Stadium the next day, and the Gators lost 9-7 and 12-9, being done in by big innings in both games. In the opener, Camp scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Israel Dozier (Kempsville/Virginia Beach) had two hits and two RBIs, Walker had three hits, and Fernandez added a three-run homer.
In the nightcap, the Gators gave up a six-run fourth inning after taking a 4-2 lead. Jayden Alvarez (Woodside/Newport News) had two singles and drove in three runs. Bryson had a pair of singles and drove in a run.
This week, the Gators have doubleheader at Mid-Atlantic Christian University (N.C.) on Wednesday, and a three-game series against Surry Community College (N.C.) at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton on the weekend. Surry is ranked seventh in the nation.
