MORRISTOWN, Tenn.- The Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers picked up a signature early season win on Saturday, grinding out a halftime lead before opening things up for a 58-44 victory over Walters State on the road to close the opening weekend of the 2024-2025 season in Tennessee.
The Bucs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held the Senators off the scoreboard for the first three minutes of the contest, but Walters State found some rhythm to take a 13-12 lead after one in a defensive battle between the two.
The Bucs made some adjustments at the quarter and got things going on their end of the floor as Sarah Owona and Samantha Serrano led the charge as they grabbed the lead back and took a 29-24 advantage into the break at half.
After a solid defensive first half behind them, the Bucs turned up the screws a little bit more in the third, holding the Senators to just eight points in the period to extend their lead to 43-32.
With their first win of the season within reach, the Bucs upped their game another notch in the fourth, going up by as many as 18 before finishing Walters off 58-44 to make their long trip home from the Volunteer State Sunday a little bit more enjoyable.
Three Bucs scored in double figures as Serrano led the way with 14, Asiana Britt had 12, and Sarah Owona chipped in 11.
The Bucs go 1-1 on opening weekend while Walters drops both their contests at home to fall to 0-2.
Bucs fans will get a chance to see their 2024-2025 FSW Women's Basketball squad at home for the first time on Friday and Saturday when they host Wayne County at 6:00 PM and 2:00 PM at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.
