No. 22 Barton men handled at 5th ranked Cowley ending Cougars’ two-game streak in Arkansas City.
The 22nd ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team led only twice Saturday evening with season low performances in Arkansas City as the 5th ranked Tigers of Cowley College handled most of the contest for a 95-67 victory.
Barton's leads came early, the game slipping away following a Cowley 10-0 run midway through the first half before a 20-5 stretch coming out of the halftime locker room buried the Cougars a hole they'd never escape from.
Season worst percentages added to the Cougars' misery, offensively shooting just 33.3% with 19 turnovers in being held 19 points below their average while surrendering an opponent high 53% from the field and second most points scored against.
The loss additionally snapped a pair of Barton streaks having won the last two meetings on the Tigers' home floor and a four-game streak on the season in dropping to 11-5 in KJCCC action and 17-5 overall. Cowley bounces back from a big loss at Dodge City in taking the season series sweep improving to 14-2 atop the conference standings and 19-3 overall.
Next up is another ranked team licking its wounds from a double-digit loss as 15th ranked Butler Community College comes to town Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym. Like the Tigers of Cowley, the Grizzlies were also handed a double-digit loss Saturday hosting Dodge City in slipping to a third place 11-4 mark ahead of the Cougars and 16-5 on the season.
Ten Cougars hit the scoring column being led by Aris Rodriguez' 14 points, Keandre Kindell's 11, and Brent Moss' 10 points and 14 rebounds for his 9th double-double of the season.
Maddox Spray came off the bench late, closing out the evening's scoring on a personal 5-0 run including splashing a deep three-pointer for a career high 5 points.
Five Tigers reached double-figures in pinning the worst loss on the Cougars in the series, Dallas Whitney and Marcus Whitlock, Jr. leading the way with 16 points each and a combined 5 steals, 6 assists, and 3 blocks. Marcus Ziegler and Shamarrie Hugie each scored 15 points combining for 4-of-7 arc busting shots, 5 assists, 4 steals, and grabbing 7 rebounds each. Avante Nichols rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points off the bench.
