YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (6-1, 2-1) split a doubleheader with Yavapai College (3-3, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, losing game one 3-2 before winning the second game 7-2 to take two out of three games in the series.

Javier Diaz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Matadors' starter Sergio Lugo allowed just one run on two hits in 5.0 innings in the loss.

Yavapai opened the scoring in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead before the Matadors responded in their half of the first inning on an Andres Ontiveros single scoring Diaz.

The Roughriders regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs off the Matadors' bullpen. Arizona Western cut the deficit to one run at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning but left the tying run on base in the seventh inning.

Luis Angulo and Victor Lopez each collected two hits, and Diaz drove in a pair as the Matadors earned a doubleheader split with a 7-2 win in game two.

The Matadors jumped out early thanks to a three-run third inning, scoring a run on an error and two more scoring on a Diaz single.

After Yavapai scored two in the fourth, the Matadors answered with a two spot of their own on a pair of RBI doubles from Angulo and Ontiveros to put the Matadors up 5-2. The Matadors added two more in the eighth inning to pull away for the win.

Lukas Pacal allowed two runs and struck out four in 5.0 innings while Yoni Casto and Gergorys Mateo combined for four shutout innings in relief.

The Matadors head on the road on Friday, February 7, heading to Thatcher, Ariz., to take on Eastern Arizona in the opener of a three-game series at 2:00 pm.
