The first 15 minutes were a back-and-forth affair, but Colby would score 20 points as a team over the last 5:50 in the first half to extend their halftime lead to 11 points. The Plainsmen came with a charged-up counter punch out of halftime, upping their physicality and intensity on their way to trimming the Colby lead to 4 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The Colby Trojans countered, extending their lead to 13 by the 11-minute mark, which was quickly followed by an onslaught that saw the lead shrink again to 3 by the 7:35 mark. A hook shot would cut the Trojan lead to one with 4:19 remaining, yet would be answered immediately by a Khadir Muhammad three on the following possession to get the difference in the game back up to 4.
The Trojans would hold onto that lead throughout the rest of the game, with clutch free throws made by freshman Cassius Watkins with 14.7 seconds left. Watkins would later get the deflection that led to a Colby steal that sealed the contest for good on the game's final possession.
