Sophomore jaqson Tejada of Marion tossed a no-hitter as the DMACC baseball team

defeated Kirkwood Community College (KCC), 1-0, in the first game of a three-game series April 26 at Cedar Rapids. The Bears won the second game on April 26, 14-4 and used a five-run rally in the top of the ninth of a nine-inning game on April 27 to closed out the sweep with a 12-10 win.

 

The wins give the Bears a 20-26 overall record and they improved to 14-14 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Tejada struck out seven and walked three as he ran his season record to 2-2. He faced 24 batters in the seven-inning game, three over the minimum.

 

DMACC had just three hits in the win and sophomore Carter Bryan of Johnston accounted for the game's only run with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Sophomore Jackson Manning of Keosauqua had four hits, including a double, and four runs batted in and freshman Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., had two hits and four RBIs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears led 1-0 after the first inning, 2-1 after three innings and took control of the game with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. KCC, ranked 15th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), made it an 8-4 game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh before DMACC closed out the win with six runs in the top of the eighth.

 

Sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion helped the Bears with three singles and an RBI and freshman Brock Moore of Urbandale collected two hits and drove in a run.

 

Sophomore Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., pitched the first six innings for DMACC and improved to 4-1 with the win. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out seven and walked one. Freshman Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., went a third of an inning and gave up two runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout and freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went an inning and two-thirds on the mound. He allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

 

Frommelt's two-run single keyed DMACC's five-run ninth inning rally in the Bears' win in the final game of the series. KCC led 3-0 after the second inning and the game was tied at 3-3 when DMACC scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. KCC went up 6-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third and then fell behind 7-6 when the Bears scored four runs in the top of the eighth. KCC claimed a 9-7 lead with three more runs in the bottom of the eight and scored its other run in the bottom of the ninth.

 

Frommelt had three hits, including a solo home run, and drove in three DMACC runs. The Bears got two hits and two RBIs each from Manning and freshman Jake Espeland of Des Moines.

 

Freshman Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., started for DMACC and went two and a third innings. He allowed three runs on four hits with three walks. Sophomore Bobby Uthe of Ames went four and a third innings, allowing three runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks and freshman Nick Cox of Polk City pitched one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout and two walks. Freshman Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter went just a third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced and improved to 1-0 with the win. Theiss pitched an inning and a third and earned his first save of the season. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out three batters.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in a doubleheader April 29 at the DMACC baseball diamond. ECC is 30-19 overall and 17-11 in the ICCAC. The Panthers' wins include an 11-5 decision over DMACC in a nine-inning game April 16 at Iowa Falls.
