FSCJ Baseball Sprints to Best Start in a Decade
The FSCJ Manta Rays secured a 5-1 victory over South Georgia State College on Tuesday at FSCJ North Campus, and at 8-2 mark their best start through 10 games in a decade.
The Manta Rays are getting it done in all phases of the game, including converting on 20 of 25 stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has thrown 71 strikeouts to just 31 walks, and behind them is a defense fielding .979.
"This is a fun group to be around," said head coach Brad Frick. "They have really come together as a team during the Fall and we're seeing the early results of the strong bond they've developed. If they stay healthy and bring this level of energy each time out then we will have the opportunity to do some special things together."
The team took an early lead in the first inning when Dominic Masto hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in a run. Their lead extended further in the second inning as Douglas Langley and Logan Disbrow each delivered RBI singles, adding three more runs to the scoreboard. Disbrow was a key player in the game, leading the team with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. He went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, contributing two hits, alongside Billy Girgis, who also recorded two hits for the team. The Manta Rays showcased their patience at the plate, accumulating a total of seven walks, with Isaac Newman and Disbrow each drawing two bases on balls.
On the mound, Gavan Bradley set the tone for FSCJ Manta Rays, delivering a strong performance as the starting pitcher. He allowed only two hits and no runs over five innings, striking out two and walking two. Braden Hansen provided solid relief, pitching three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit while striking out one and walking one. The Manta Rays' disciplined approach and well-rounded performance helped them secure a decisive win.
FSCJ returns to Howard Roey Field - where they are a perfect 6-0 - on Friday, February 14 against South Georgia State College, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
