On Wednesday night, No. 3 New Mexico Military Institute defeated Western Texas College in straight-set fashion with a 3-0 sweep in a packed Cahoon Armory gym. With the win, the Broncos improved to a perfect 11-0 record in conference play with a 25-2 overall record on the season.
Set 1
In the first set, NMMI established their momentum as they took the first point behind her first kill of the night for Sarah Schubert to get the Bronco offense rolling. With the help of some excellent defense by the back row, Allison Miller was able to give NMMI an early 8-4 advantage as she smashed a ball over the net - which was too hot to handle for the Western Texas defense.
As both teams battled through the first set, NMMI took full control with a 12-9 lead from which they never looked back. The Broncos crafted a 6-0 run in order to jump out to a 18-9 lead. As the Westerns tried to extend the set, Dilean Bounds secured the set-victory with a well-placed ball in the corner which left the Westerners scrambling and a 25-14 win.
Set 2
To open the middle set, NMMI continued the first-set momentum as they set the tone with an opening run of 8-2 behind a pair of kills by Selin Guler and Miller. Trying to get into the game, Western Texas were able to earn some points of their own as they cut the NMMI lead to 10-5 but this would be the closest score the set would see.
The Bronco offense exploded to end the set as they finished on a 15-6 run, where the Westerners defense couldn't find any solution. As the Broncos carved out their run, Miller played a huge role in the run. The outside hitter notched three of her six kills in the second half of the set to secure the middle-set victory 25-11.
Set 3
To open the final set, NMMI continued their high-powered offense as they set the tone with an opening run of 7-2 behind a pair of kills by Michelle Mlikan and Guler. After an early lead the Westerners were able to earn some points of their own and made it an 8-4 game.
Although the Westerners would try to fight back, a pair of powerful kills by Yuliana Favela initiated the final run of high-powered offense for the Broncos as they jumped out to a 17-8 advantage. With the help of great attacking play by Miller, Schubert and Guler the Broncos were able to take a 10-point lead with a 22-12 advantage. To put an end to the match, MJ Stephens recorded a pair of kills to secure the 25-13 match-clinging set.
Despite the defense allowing the fewest points in a three-set win all season, Head Coach Shelby Forchtner views the success from offensive side, It's little more about our offense this game … our last two games we've been putting it together and now our offense is catching up and it's what we need to close out the season," Forchtner said. "When we put it all together it's hard for teams to slow us down … if we finish off the season playing like we did tonight we'll have great confidence going into the regional tournament," Forchtner said.
The Broncos return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 26 as they travel to Clarendon, TX for a conference matchup with Clarendon College at 2 p.m. CDT.
