The Baton Rouge Bears faced off against the Southern Arkansas University Tech Rockets for the first time in history this afternoon, in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. The Bears managed to pull away late in the first half and maintained their advantage in the second half, ultimately defeating the Rockets with a score of 81-68.
The first half was a tightly contested battle, with both teams exchanging baskets and leads. The Rockets' largest lead came at 16-11, with 13:49 remaining in the half. The Bears found momentum from their bench, as Dylan Dominique scored six consecutive points, giving the Bears a 22-18 lead with 10:33 left in the half. They concluded the first half with a 41-34 lead over the Rockets.
In the second half, the Bears ramped up their defensive effort, disrupting the Rockets' offensive flow. The Bears extended their lead to 15 points, 55-40, after Troy Joseph hit a floater in the lane with 12:49 remaining. The Bears outscored the Rockets 40 to 35 in the second half, securing the victory with a final score of 81-68.
With this win, the Bears improved their season record to 8-8, while the Rockets fell to 9-7.
Dashaunte Cormier-Bellard led the Bears in scoring with 17 points. The Bears had three student-athletes score in double figures. Ja'Varius Thompson topped the SAU Tech Rockets with a game-high 19 points, and the Rockets also had three student-athletes reach double figures in scoring.
