SEDALIA, Mo. – SFCC (22-6, 7-5 Region 16) closed the regular season with a 76-67 win over Crowder College on Saturday, March 1, at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The game featured five lead changes and three ties.
The Lady Roadrunners took a 12-4 lead after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Madison Johnson of Harrisonville with seven minutes left in the first quarter.
"I thought we kept it pretty simple early on," head coach Nicole Collier said. "We took what the defense gave us. I thought offensively we were fine. We were getting the looks we wanted. Defensively, we weren't very good. We gave up some offensive rebounds. I thought we cleaned that up as the game went on."
Crowder responded, taking a 15-14 lead with three minutes left in the quarter and extending it to 23-18 at the end of the period. The Lady 'Riders pushed their advantage to 10 with five minutes left in the second quarter, but SFCC answered. The Lady Roadrunners stormed back, taking a 35-34 halftime lead after two free throws from Sullivan.
"Crowder is a very talented group," Collier said. "They all can score. I thought we toughened up midway through the second quarter. I thought we showed grit and toughness to erase the deficit and take a one-point lead going into halftime."
SFCC controlled the second half, outscoring Crowder 26-11 in the third quarter and making key plays down the stretch to secure a home game in the Region 16 Tournament semifinal round.
Sullivan and freshman guard Malia Rodgers of Montgomery City led SFCC with 18 points each. Johnson added 16 points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range. Buscher posted a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 21 rebounds while also leading the team with two blocks. Sophomore guard Kimora McClure of Austin, Texas, tied Sullivan for the team lead in assists with five. Rodgers led SFCC with three steals.
"We appreciated the big crowd we had tonight," Collier said. "We would like to see another one on March 11 as we open our postseason tournament at home."
SFCC honored its sophomores and graduating freshmen at halftime of the Roadrunners' game against Missouri State University-West Plains.
The Lady Roadrunners will host Crowder again in the Region 16 Tournament semifinals on Tuesday, March 11, at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., and no passes will be accepted.
