BOONE, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball traveled to Boone, Iowa for a conference matchup with Des Moines Area Community College Wednesday night. The Hawks secured a victory by a final score of 63-57 for their seventh-straight triumph.
Northeast (9-1, 2-0 ICCAC) received votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball Rankings this week for the first time this season and proved why they are receiving national recognition in the contest with the Bears. The Hawks pulled ahead early before falling behind in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer from Mia Wiederin (Norfolk, Neb.) with 50 seconds left in a tied ballgame was enough to push Northeast over the hump. Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.) led Northeast in scoring with 28 points while Wiederin had 14 points of her own to keep the Hawks undefeated in conference play.
STAT SHEET:
Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.): 28 PTS, 8 REB, 3 STL
Mia Wiederin (Norfolk, Neb.): 14 PTS, 7 REB, 3 STL, 2 BLK
Vilique Fallis (Rapid City, S.D.): 7 PTS, 5 REB
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the big victory against DMACC:
"We got off to a great start," Svehla said. "DMACC is tough and we couldn't separate. In the second half, we just did not have any rhythm and found ourselves down by eight points in the fourth. Fortunately, we made some plays and got some stops in the final minute to secure the win. We did not play great, but I love our competitive spirit to find a way."
Svehla on hosting No. 15 NIACC next:
"We will have another tough opponent on Saturday who is nationally ranked," Svehla said. "We will need a great effort."
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will stay at home and will take on No. 15 North Iowa Area Community College next at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
