Last-inning antics

Last-inning antics

It was a last-inning kind of day for the Cyclones as they lost their first game in the last inning and made a huge comeback in their second game for a win.

GAME ONE
The Cyclones were ready for a rematch with Kirkwood Community College and nearly got the best of the Eagles.

Moraine Valley started off strong, getting ahead 2-0 in the first inning with a little help. Andrew Phelan (2-for-4) walked before Timothy O'Connell (1-for-2) was hit by a pitch, and Alejandro Munoz (1-for-2) was walked to load the bases. With the next at-bat, a wild pitch was able to get Phelan across the plate. Preston Lund then came up and hit a sac fly which scored O'Connell.

Both pitchers kept things tight in the next couple of innings before the Eagles' bats came out to retake the lead, 3-2. The Cyclones tied the score again with an RBI double from Jayden Armstrong (1-for-3). The Eagles then took a 4-3 lead in the fourth and the Cyclones tied it in their next at-bat with an RBI double from Munoz. A couple of walks and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the fate for the Cyclones as they lost 5-4.

Pitchers Jack Greaney and Maddox Reta combined for seven strikeouts and five walks this game.

GAME TWO
A last-inning surge gave the Cyclones a 9-8 victory over North Dakota State College of Science.

North Dakota scored first but Moraine Valley countered after Alejandro Munoz (1-for-3, RBI) drove in Andrew Phelan (1-for-4, RBI) with an RBI double. After two outs, Troy Vosburgh (2-for-4, RBI) hit a fly ball and reached third on a fielding error, scoring Munoz to tie it 2-2.

The Cyclone bats went quiet while North Dakota increased the spread to 7-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Mateo Velazquez (2-for-3) and Aiden Radtke (1-for-3) singled. Lucas Hicks (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) then came up and flew out, however, a throwing error allowed both base runners to score.

By the bottom of the seventh, North Dakota had stretched their lead to 8-4, but the Cyclones weren't done yet. Before the first out, four Cyclones were walked and Velazquez, Vosburgh and Hicks singled to tie the score. Phelan hit a hard grounder and reached on an error, scoring the go-ahead run by Christian Rosales, who was intentionally walked.

Caston Norris started on the mound striking out five.
