OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  The No. 10-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team secured at least a share of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Division title by defeating the Labette Cardinals 91-60 in Parsons, Kan., Thursday night.

The Cavaliers (25-2/12-0) have a two-game lead over Kansas City Kansas with two games to play in the regular season. A victory over Fort Scott on Saturday or Hesston on Wednesday would secure the title outright. This is the third conference championship in five years under head coach Rand Chappell and the ninth all-time.

A common theme for the Cavaliers this season is jumping out to a big lead in the first 20 minutes and proved the case at Labette. Johnson County led by 20 at the break and padded their advantage in the second half to post the 31-point victory.

Freshman forward Tavian Cruse was the game's top scorer with 20 points. He connected on 10-of-11 shots while also grabbing nine rebounds.

Freshman guard Gavin Harvey followed with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting with three from 3-point range and two free throws. He also dished out five assists.  Sophomore guard Steven Samuels hit 6-of-9 shot to post 14 points.

Coach Chappell got solid efforts from sophomore forward Brandon Mann (9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists), sophomore guard Mauryon Turner (8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), sophomore guard Jordan Jenkins (8 points), sophomore forward Traeger Rader and freshman forward Ron Taylor (5 points each) and sophomore guard Ben Miller (4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals).

The Cavaliers shot a season-best 65 percent from the field and outrebounded the Cardinals 38-to-17.

Labette was led by Denys Kaminski who provided 13 points off the bench. Their highest scoring starter was Demarco Davis with eight.
