Hellige fans career-high 10 vs. John Wood as Chargers split weekend doubleheaders

GALESBURG — The Sandburg softball team split doubleheaders at John Wood and at home against Milwaukee Tech on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers have now won five of eight since coming home from their spring break trip.

FRIDAY

Key moments
The Chargers never trailed after taking a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. Ailexa Hunter tripled on the first pitch of the game and scored on Bailey Ryan's groundout in the next at-bat. Jaycee Craig added an RBI double in the second and later came around to score. 

Sandburg standout
Hellige whiffed a career-best 10 batters in going the distance for the win in the circle. The sophomore out of Fort Madison, Iowa, allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks. Hellige's previous career best was six strikeouts. She reached that mark three times, most recently March 17 against Bay.

Key moment
Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth, the Blazers took the lead on back-to-back one-out RBI doubles followed by an error that led to two more runs.

Sandburg standout
First baseman Hannah Pyle had two of Sandburg's seven hits. She singled twice, scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base.

Key moments
The Stormers plated single tallies in the first two innings, the busted the game open with a five-run third to go ahead 7-0. Six of the first seven MATC batters reached base in the third.

Cheyanne Rodgers doubled, walked, scored a run and drove in a run in her two plate appearances.

Key moments
• Hunter gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead as she led off the first with a fly to right that was misplayed and allowed her to circle the bases. Pyle made it 2-0 three batters later as she connected for a more conventional home run, popping one over the center-field fence.
• Pyle added another homer in the bottom of the third, connecting for a two-run shot to center that put the Chargers up 4-1.

Sandburg standout
Pyle's pair of homers accounted for both of her hits in three at-bats. Her two runs scored and three RBIs in the contest led Sandburg. They marked the first two homers of her Chargers career.
