Colts vs Vikings of Westchester Community College
On Thursday November 21st the SUNY Orange Colts took on conference opponent the Vikings of Westchester Community College. The first half was a back and fourth affair for both teams as there were six different lead changes. In the first half, the Colts faced some troubles shooting the ball from behind the three point arc, but more then made up for it in close, shooting 20-41 (48.8%) from the field. The Colts were able to maintain their lead going into halftime with a score of 45-44. In half number one the Colts out scored and out rebounded the 29 rebounds to the Vikings 16. Going into the second half the Colts led with the help of So. Forward #22 Jabari Phillip. Phillip led the Colts with 17 points on 8-12 shooting while coming down with 8 rebounds and two steals in just the first half alone.
In the second half, the Colts came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency as three of the Colt starters combined for a total of 38 points in the second half. Sophomores Jabari Phillip and Marquis Gill shared the wealth with both of them scoring 13 points on 8 attempts and a So. Daniel Lans followed right behind scoring 12 points on 8 attempts. In the second half the Colts outscored the Vikings 53-43 giving the Colts an 11 point victory over their Mid-Hudson Conference opponent the by a score of 98-87. The Colts move on to a 6-1 record and are 2-0 in conference play.
In this win over the Vikings, Orange scored a season high in points totaling 98 points. This is also first time this season the Colts have scored over 90 points. The Colts shot the ball well scoring on 53% of their shots taken going 40-75 from the field and for the second game in a row have finished the game making more than 30% of shots from behind the three point arc. Aside from their great shooting, Orange played excellant defense as they have done all year. This is the 6th game this year where they have held their opponent to under a 50% shooting percentage. Lastly this is their second consecutive game where the Colts have finished with 20+ Assists, finishing with 22 assists as a team. Three Colts finished the game with season highs, Freshman Guard/Forward #2 Kassius Paulin finished the game with a season high 10 rebounds and Sophomores Marquis Gill and Jabari Phillip finished the game with season highs in points totaling 18 for Gill and 30 for Phillip.
So. Forward #22 Jabari Phillip finished the game with a team high and season high 30 points on 14-21 shooting while also leading the team in rebounds grabbing 11 rebounds. Jabari also dished out three assists and came away with two steals.
So. Guards #1 Marquis Gill and #3 Daniel Lans tied as the teams second leading scoring with them both finishing with 18 points. Lans scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting while also having an all around great game finishing with five rebounds, five assists and five steals to add to his great shooting night. Gill finished the night with 18 points on 6-14 shooting while leading the team in 3 pointers made, shooting 4-11 from behind the three point arc. Gill also finished as the team leader in assists for the game getting seven assists and also grabbing two rebounds.
Fr. Guard/Forward #2 Kassius Paulin finished the game with his first double-double of the season gabbing a season high 10 rebounds and scoring 10 points. Paulin also finished with an assist and a steal.
The Colts play their second conference opponent in a row taking on the Senators of Ulster County Community College on Tuesday November 26th @6:00. The Colts will look to get their first conference win on their home court this season and to advance to 3-0 in the conference.
