Bulldogs grab two wins at Gulf Shores

Mississippi Gulf Coast came back from a big deficit against a ranked opponent in its second game of the first day of the Coyote Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., on Friday.
The Bulldogs erased a five-run deficit to win 11-8 over No. 11 Gulf Coast State. In the first game, Gulf Coast won 7-2 over Enterprise State.
Down 5-0, the Bulldogs cut Commodores lead to a run in the third. Aleah Beaugez (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) singled in a run, and another scored on an error on a grounder by Madison Laiche (Fr., Luling, La./John Curtis). Brooklyn Mitchell (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) added a two-run double.
Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) had an RBI single before coach David Kuhn went to the bench for pinch-hitter Caroline Batson (Fr., Wiggins/Stone).
"She had a two-out, two-strike base hit up the middle to score two runs," he said. "That was the difference in the ballgame."
That made it 7-6, and two more runs scored on an error later in the inning. Laiche doubled in another run in the sixth, and after the Commodores scored two in the sixth, Savannah Wilbanks (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) added another insurance run on a double for the final score.
Beaugez had two doubles in her three hits. Mitchell and Tate had two hits for the Bulldogs, who had 13 hits.
The first game was more straightforward. The Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie in the third after two runs scored on a wild pitch and an error. Thomson drove in a run with a ground ball, and Laiche singled in another.
Tate and Beaugez added RBI singles later in the game. Kinsey Cochran (Fr., Hurley/East Central) joined Beaugez and Baleigh Tullos (Fr., Hurley/East Central) with two hits.
Olivia Falcon (So., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) struck out six in 5.1 innings for the win, and Karley Rouse (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) got five outs for the save.
"Bird threw really well, and Karley came in and slammed the door," Kuhn said. "We got some timely hitting and played pretty good defense."
Gulf Coast closes out its Gulf Shores trip Saturday with another 11:15 a.m. start, this time against Pensacola State. They play Northwest-Shoals at 3:45 p.m.
