Jayhawks hold off Kirtland Secure Home Win

The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks defeated the Kirtland Community College Firebirds 77-66 on Saturday evening in conference play. The Jayhawks brought intensity to the game following a tough defeat on Wednesday and executed on both sides of the ball. The Jayhawks held the Firebirds to just 27% from the field and 15.4% from behind the arc in the first half. Sophomore guard Kevon Washington held the Firebirds leading scorer scoreless in the first half, and Muskegon led 40-27. The second half was a more even affair, and the Firebirds started to catch fire from behind the arc. But a diverse scoring attack from the Jayhawks kept the Firebirds at bay as Muskegon held on to the victory despite being outscored 39-37 in the second half. Sophomore Will Chye led the Jayhawks in scoring finishing with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Kevon Washington added an impressive 20-point, ten rebound double-double performance. Freshmen Ny'Zhem Marshall and Lamarkis Graham chipped in 11 points. The win moves the Jayhawks record to 11-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Jayhawks next matchup against Delta College is on Wednesday, February 5th at Bartels-Rhode gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
