
Softball team dominates in season opener
The Eastern Florida State College softball team opened the regular season with a dominant performance against USC Union.
The Titans picked up the 8-0 victory as starting pitcher Avery Velazquez did not allow a hit over five innings and struck out 10 hitters for her first win. Velazquez struck out at least one hitter in every inning and struck out the side in the third inning.
While Velazquez was in total control on the mound, the Titans offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first inning.
Isabel Otero led off with a single, stole both second and third and scored on Aracelis Jimenez RBI single. Jimenez would steal a base and score on Ashley Corazzini's groundout. Velazquez, Emma George, Ashley Grieser and Martha Jones would all reach and score in the inning.
Up 6-0 after one inning, the Titans would add a run in the third inning as Jones singled, stole second and scored on Jessica Camacho's double.
Up 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Grieser singled to lead off the inning and scored on an error to end the game.
Otero and Camacho each had two hits with a double while Grieser scored twice in the win.
The Titans will be back in action later today, playing St. Johns River State College at 5:30 p.m. in Madeira Beach.
