LEESBURG, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball split with Hillsborough Community College (HCC) over the weekend. The Lakehawks took game one 8-7 in 12 innings and lost 7-6 in game two the next day.
Game One – HCC 7, LSSC 8 (12 innings)
On Friday, the Lakehawks hosted HCC in a thrilling 12 inning battle on Friday afternoon.
Lake-Sumter took the lead in the bottom of the first after a single from Camden Williamson, scoring Christian Cantwell from second base.
HCC took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. The Lakehawks took the lead back in the fifth with a single to the right side from Ean Gimson, scoring two.
Trailing 4-2, HCC added runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the score at 4-4 forcing the game into extra innings.
HCC took a one-run lead in the 11th forcing Lake-Sumter to make a move offensively.
Pinch hit singles from Riley Fitzgerald and Osjun Rivas tied the game back up at 5-5 in the bottom of the 11th.
The Hawks answered back in the top of the 12th, scoring two runs by capitalizing on several Lakehawk mistakes.
Trailing by two going into the bottom of the 12th inning, Williamson and Villaman led off the frame with a pair of singles. A double steal put both in scoring position in time for Mason Blackburn to hit an infield single, scoring one.
With one out and down by one, sophomore Edwin Melendez called game with a double to right center field to score two for the walkoff win.
Melendez, Williamson, Blackburn, Ryan Villaman, and, Tanner Reid all recorded multiple hits in the win.
Five Lakehawk pitchers assisted in the win over the Hawks. Freshman Ty Floyd secured his first win on the mound after pitching the top of 12th inning,
Game Two – LSSC 6, HCC 7
Saturday afternoon in Tampa was another back-and-forth game between the Lakehawks and the Hawks.
Down by one in the third, Williamson and Blackburn started the inning with a pair of walks. Back-to-back hits from Tad Brooks and Reid gave the Lakehawks a 3-1 lead.
HCC scored in the third, fourth and fifth to take the lead back 5-3.
Back-to-back doubles from Brooks and Reid in the top of the sixth put another run on the board for Lake-Sumter.
Trailing by one in the seventh, the Lakehawks put two more runs on the board by capitalizing on HCC defensive mistakes.
The Lakehawks maintained a 6-5 lead until the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded, a pair of singles gave the Hawks the 7-6 win.
Brooks, Reid, and Brady Byers recorded two hits each against the Hawks. Reid accounted for three RBIs while Brooks logged two.
Right-handed pitcher Jack Johnson recorded the loss on the mound with 3.2 innings pitched. Johnson allowed two runs on seven hits moving to a 1-1 record.
The Lakehawks move to a 4-3 record on the season.
