Vikings come up short in exciting home debut
Macomb men's basketball team fends off Glen Oaks.
After trailing Macomb by as many as 20 points in the first half Wednesday at home, the Glen Oaks Community College men's basketball team chipped away midway through the second half to give the home crowd an exciting finish. Despite the Vikings getting to within a point, Macomb held on for a 96-86 victory.
Back-to-back baskets by forward Amauri Moore helped trim the deficit to 10 points before a field goal by freshman forward Akin Smith made it a 57-49 game as the energy in the gym shifted in the Vikings' favor.
The Monarchs made enough shots to keep Glen Oaks at bay until freshman forward Aaron Humphrey Jr. scored consecutive buckets and sophomore guard Darrius Roach drained a 3-pointer to make it a five-point contest at 65-60. In between, the Vikings forced a shot-clock violation that fired up the crowd.
A couple of successful drives to the basket by freshman point guard Mike Phillips and freshman forward Taurus Baugh made it a 72-71 game. But that was as close as the Vikings would get after struggling from the foul line in the second half.
Humphrey Jr. led GOCC with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Roach poured in 18 points with a pair of assists, Phillips finished with 17 points and three boards, and Moore had 14 points and five rebounds. Smith added four point and four rebounds for GOCC, which dropped to 2-1 overall this season.
