SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (12-10, 9-5 ACCAC) swept an ACCAC road doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert CC on Saturday, Mar. 1, winning 12-4 (six innings) and 25-4 (five innings). Sophomore Sadie Su'a had a big day at the plate for the Cougars, finishing 7 for 9 with two home runs, seven runs, seven RBIs, and three stolen bases. She also recorded a complete-game victory in the circle in the game-one win. Freshman Zaybri Franz hit a grand slam, and freshman pitcher Kayle James recorded her first collegiate win in game two. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars used a seven-run fourth inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit and added three runs in the sixth to post the 12-4, run-rule victory. 

Freshman Alyssa Jemio had an RBI groundout, and sophomore Nadia Rascon scored on an error in the first to open the scoring. After the Coyotes tied the game in the first and took a 4-2 lead in the third, the Cougars exploded for seven in the fourth. 

Freshman Kaeliann Glass, sophomore Michelle Balcazar, and freshman Tazia Blake all singled to load the bases with no outs. Sophomore Sabrina Erran then singled to score Glass, and freshman Jerzey Jarvis cleared the bases with a three-run double. She came home on a two-out home run from Su'a, and Rascon later came home on an RBI single from Jemio to conclude the frame's scoring. 

In the sixth, Glass ripped a two-run double, and Blake added a two-out RBI single to give SMCC the 12-4 victory. 

Su'a finished 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a home run. Glass was also 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double, and Blake finished with two hits, finishing 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Erran was the fourth Cougar to record two hits, going 2 for 3 with a run, an RBI, and a walk. 

Rascon scored three times and doubled, Jemio had a pair of RBIs, and Jarvis had three RBIs

Su'a (4-1) earned the win with six innings of work in the circle. She fanned five and worked around eight hits, four earned runs, and three walks. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars' game-two victory featured a nine-run first and a 14-run fifth, resulting in a 25-4, five-inning victory. 

Su'a went a perfect 5 for 5 with five runs, five RBIs, three stolen bases, and a grand slam in the first. Franz hit a grand slam in the fifth and finished 1 for 1 with two runs, four RBIs, and a walk. 

Jemio was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, a double, a stolen base, and a run scored, and sophomore Elise Saucedo was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Jarvis went 2 for 3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and a double, while Balcazar was 2 for 2 with a run, three RBIs, and a double. 

Sophomore Jasmyne Campos came off the bench to finish 1 for 1 with two runs, two RBIs, a double, and two walks. Freshman Tammy Arnold scored a pair of runs and added an RBI, and freshman McKenna Kraft had the team's fifth double and an RBI. 

James (1-1) earned the win with two innings of relief work that featured three strikeouts, two walks, and no hits. Jemio started the game and went 1.1 innings with no hits. Freshman Nuvia Urquiza and Rebekah Mendoza also saw time in relief.
