Warner, OK – The Indian Hills Softball squad earned a split Saturday afternoon after taking the frontend of a twinbill at Connors State College (OK). The Warriors dropped the Cowgirls 11-3 in the opener before falling 7-4 in the nightcap.
The Warrior offense came to life in the opener to snap an eight-game losing streak. Indian Hills pounded out 14 hits in game one, including three from sophomore Yarah Zuiver (__). Eight different players tallied a hit in the win, including five with multi-hit performances.
Indian Hills added seven base knocks in the nightcap, but a late rally from the Warriors fell short. Indian Hills moves to 7-11 overall on the year.
In Saturday's opener, the Warriors struck first with a run in the top half of the first before the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the second frame. The two sides traded runs again in the third and fourth innings before the Warriors tacked on two in the fifth, including a run-scoring double from Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley). Indian Hills broke things open in the sixth with four runs before Shana Buford (Donnellson, IA/Central Lee) delivered the knockout punch with a two-run double in the seventh.
Zuiver finished the contest 3-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI while Buford went 2-5 at the dish with three runs scored.
Sophomore Ashlynn Sheets (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) secured the win with a complete game victory. Sheets scattered five hits with just one earned run while striking out five batters.
The Warriors' shot at a sweep came up short as Connors State erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pull away. Indian Hills plated a run in the sixth inning, but the rally fell short.
Buford added two more hits in the loss while Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead) and Courtney Locke (Bow, WA/Burlington-Edison)delivered home runs for the Warriors.
The Warriors return to action Sunday, March 9 for their home opener at R.L. Hellyer Field against Jefferson College (MO).
