Coffeyville, Kan. - A strong first quarter powered the #22 NJCAA-ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team to a 64-55 defeat of #6 Hutchinson Blue Dragons. With the victory, the Red Ravens improved their overall record to 18-3 including a 13-3 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) games. The 13-3 KJCCC record currently has the Red Ravens in third place in the 13-team Division I conference.
Coffeyville roared out of the gates to set the tone in the game outscoring the Blue Dragons 22-9 in the first quarter to put #6 ranked Hutchinson on their heels. Coffeyville kept up the pressure in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 15-point, 38-23 lead.
Hutchinson was able to close the gap in the second half pulling within 5 points a couple of different times late in the game, however, Coffeyville was able to withstand the Blue Dragon surge and finished the game with the 9-point 64-55 victory.
Game leaders for Coffeyville included sophomore guard Norika Welch with a game-high 19 points and 6 rebounds, freshman forward Aubrey Hishaw with 14 points, and sophomore guard Karys Washington with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Coffeyville returns to action with a home matchup against the Broncbusters of Garden City on Saturday, February 8th. Tipoff in Nellis Gymnasium is set for 2:00 p.m.
