JCCC women’s soccer team falls short in national championship match

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- For the second straight year and third time in program history the Johnson County Community College women's soccer team fell one victory shy of claiming its first national championship. 

The Lady Cavaliers lost a hard-fought battle with Northwest Mississippi Community College in the NJCAA Division II National Championship Game at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama Saturday afternoon, 2-0. 

JCCC and Northwest Mississippi were scoreless for the first 43 minutes before the Rangers freshman midfielder Emma Jensen scoreless tie with just one-minute, 32-seconds before halftime. Northwest Mississippi sophomore forward Brandy Hernandez added an insurance goal in the 87th minute to seal the match and capture their first women's soccer national championship.

Johnson County sophomore goalkeeper Maddox Fergus was solid between the pipes, stopping seven of the nine shots she faced in the match.  She finished the tournament 2-1-0 with two shutouts and 15 total saves.

JCCC freshman forward Lily Marshall, who scored both game-winning goals in the pool play round, fired two of the team's shots on goal in the match. 

The Lady Cavaliers finish the season 19-1-4. During the campaign JCCC set program and region record with 15 consecutive shutouts.
