
Cleveland State Loses on Walk-Off at Nationally Ranked Georgia Highlands on Opening Day
With bases loaded, two outs and a two-strike count, Georgia Highlands hit a walk-off base hit scoring two runs to beat the Cougars on opening day.
Cleveland State fell behind three runs and didn't score until the top of the fifth before battling back to go ahead 6-3 in the final inning.
The game was head coach Aaron Bryant's first after taking over for the tenured Athletic Director Michael Policastro.
For the Cougars, Adam Baker pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out six and walking one. Logan Bryson threw two shutout innings allowing two hits while striking out two. Brody Casteel suffered the loss pitching the final two-thirds of an inning.
The Chargers had six different pitchers see action with Braxton Wade earning the victory throwing the final two-thirds of an inning allowing one hit while striking out a batter.
Brogan Jones and RIley Mahan each doubled for Cleveland State with Evan Goins and Caleb Gipson each driving in two runs. Ryan Martin homered for Georgia Highlands going 3-3 on the day while driving in three runs.
There was a double header scheduled, but the second game was canceled due to the weather causing a late game one start.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a double header, this time at Cleveland State with first pitch scheduled at noon.
