RAIDERS SOFTBALL SWEEPS OPENING DAY
Roane State Softball swept opening day at the Sand Mountain Classic in Albertville, Alabama, to start the season 2-0.
Game one, held on Friday, January 31, saw the Raiders go up against Central Alabama State.
RSCC put a run on the board first with a single by Cyla Swafford in the second inning, then built up the lead in the third with runs scored by Abby Goodall, Savannah Rea, and Shelby Armstrong.
At the top of the fourth, Delaney Shrader hit a triple and put two more runs on the board, bringing the score to 7-5.
Roane State flipped the game on its head in the top of the sixth, scoring seven runs on four hits to take the lead, 14-9. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Alexis Morrison that drove in three.
Thanks to patience at the plate and no errors in the field, Roane State clinched the win with a final score of 14-12. The team tallied 16 hits. Alexis Morrison and Shelby Armstrong each collected three for Roane State. Delaney Shrader went 2-for-5 at the plate and led the team with four RBIs. Cyla Swafford collected two hits in three at bats.
Game two, held later that same day against the Gadsden State Cardinals, also ended with a win for the Raiders, cementing their sweep of opening day.
The team was already on the board in the bottom of the first after Alexis Morrison hit a sacrifice fly, and Delaney Shrader doubled to center field, each scoring one run.
Roane State added to that early lead in the bottom of the second when Emilee Hawkes drew a walk, scoring one run, and Delaney Shrader singled, scoring two runs.
Up next, Roane State will take on Southern Union State and Snead State in the final day of the Sand Mountain Classic on Saturday, February 1. Game times are 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
