DMACC men's basketball team pushes win streak to 14 games with 75-62 decision against ILCC

 

Sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City scored 17 points and the DMACC men's basketball team ran its winning streak to 14 consecutive games with a 75-62 in over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) February 19 at Estherville.

 

Freshmen Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., and Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids came away with 12 and 13 points respectively as the Bears, ranked fourth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 26-2 overall and 14-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC has a one-game lead over Kirkwood Community College (KCC) with two conference games remaining for both teams, including a head-to-head matchup Feb. 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) is a distant third at 9-8.

 

DMACC led by as many as six points early in the first half before trailing 39-34 at halftime. The Bears, who swept their season series with the Lakers, trailed 53-50 just

more than six minutes into the second half when a 19-3 run got them a 69-56 lead with just more than five minutes to play.

 

Omweno began the run with a layup and then hit a three-pointer, giving the Bears the lead for good at 55-53. He scored nine of his 12 points during the run and freshman Jaden Jefferson had five points on a pair of free throws and a three-point basket.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent from the field, making 27 of 63  field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-31 from three-point range and 12-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

ILCC, which fell to 18-10 and 8-8, was 26-of-68 from the field for 38 percent. The Lakers made seven of 23 attempts from beyond the arc and were 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

 

ILCC got 17 rebounds from Kaden Tate and came away with a 43-30 advantage on the boards. Austin led the Bears with eight rebounds apiece and Fisher and Jeffersonm added seven. Fisher  led DMACC in assists with four and Fisher and Omweno led the way in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Feb. 22 at Mason City in its final road trip of the regular season. NIACC, a 96-80 loser to DMACC Jan. 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium, is 17-10 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
