Ice-cold shooting proved costly for the DMACC women's basketball team in a 63-26 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) December 15 at Cedar Rapids.
The Bears missed their first 22 field goal attempts and shot just 16 percent for the game in falling to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
KCC, the top-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll and the defending Division II national champion, capitalized on DMACC's drought with a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 24-5 advantage at halftime. The Eagles, who stayed unbeaten at 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the ICCAC, had a 52-17 lead after three quarters.
DMACC was 0-for-16 from the field in the first quarter and didn't get on the board until 8 minutes, 2 seconds remained in the second quarter when sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville made one of two free throws. Freshman Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs got the Bears' first field goal with a layup at the 3:40 mark of the second period.
Freshman Reagan Wheeler of Burlington led DMACC with six points and Beran added five points. For the game, DMACC was 10-of-63 for 16 percent. The Bears made just two of 24 three-point attempts and were 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
KCC came away with a 45-39 advantage in rebounding with seven rebounds from freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids leading DMACC. Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin added six rebounds and Beran led the Bears in steals with three.
The DMACC women's basketball team will close out the December portion of the 2024-25 schedule against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Dec. 18 at Fort Dodge. ICCC is 5-8 overall and 0-4 in the ICCAC.
