MCC Softball Sweeps No. 16 Marion Military Institute in Thrilling Doubleheader

MERIDIAN, Miss. – Meridian Community College softball secured an impressive sweep over No. 16-ranked Marion Military Institute on Monday, taking both games in a doubleheader, 4-2 and 6-5. The Lady Eagles delivered dominant pitching performances, clutch at-bats, and a walk-off victory to cap off an exciting evening of play at Tommy McDonald Field.

Game One: MCC Outduels Marion Military in 4-2 Victory

MCC overcame an early deficit to claim a 4-2 win in the opening game of the series. After Marion Military Institute took the lead in the first inning due to an error, the Eagles responded with a three-run bottom half of the frame.

Lainey Briggs ignited the offense with a single down the left field line, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Allie Loftin and a key RBI single from Rylee Turner to push MCC ahead.

Pitcher Marlee McCalister was stellar in the circle, going the distance with a complete-game victory. The right-hander allowed just five hits and two unearned runs while issuing no walks. Turner led the offensive charge, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Briggs also contributed, going 2-for-3 in the win.

Game Two: Walk-Off Heroics Lift MCC to 6-5 Victory

The second game of the doubleheader proved to be a dramatic showdown, as MCC battled back from a late deficit to earn a 6-5 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Trailing 5-4, Paige Berry came through with a clutch two-run double to seal the win for the Lady Eagles. Turner once again had a standout performance, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. She recorded singles in the second, third, and fifth innings while also swiping two bases.

Sarah Watson earned the win in relief, throwing 1.2 shutout innings and allowing no hits. Hannah Capello started in the circle, striking out three over 5.1 innings of work. Berry led the team with three RBIs, while Lainey Briggs added two hits. MCC's aggressive baserunning proved to be a difference-maker, as the team collected six stolen bases.

Eagles Making a Statement

With the doubleheader sweep, MCC showcased resilience and execution against a nationally ranked opponent. The Lady Eagles capitalized on key scoring opportunities, played clean defense, and saw strong contributions from multiple players.

MCC will look to carry this momentum into their next home matchup against Reid State on Wednesday, Februrary 12.
